How to incorporate recent physical security trends into your project

In this post, I will discuss 2021 trends and beyond to define how to evaluate the project life cycle. This holistic approach will lead to better outcomes developing the most suitable solution. What can we expect from the industry in the next decade? It is never easy to predict; however, we can make guided conclusions based on recent developments. Key trends between 2020- 2021 are

1. AI - Video Analytics

2. Cloud-Based Solutions

3. Cyber Security

Many manufactures offer AI-based analytics, and operators are becoming aware of the solution.

Cloud-based access control and cloud-managed VMS is getting more and more traction.

For example,

· AI live video surveillance monitoring

· Deep learning is being implemented into the camera chips, hence decreasing hardware costs

· The increase in VSaaS (Video Surveillance as a Service) is adding pressure on VSM providers to supply their cloud solution, often with limited features

Understanding current industry developments, as highlighted above, will help us to deliver robust solutions. Cloud-based services are becoming common. As such, the boundaries between physical security and cyber security are ever so thin. There is not enough push in the industry to emphasize importance during the design, development, and implementation.

For example,

· China is a prominent exporter of surveillance technologies. Hikvision and Dahua came under heavy criticism due to links to Xinjiang, Uyghur oppression, and the China government in general. Internationally, more and more press is being devoted to human rights abuses in Xinjiang.

· China enacted five major cybersecurity laws in the past six years. People's Republic of China video surveillance manufacturers are legally obligated to cooperate with PRC police and intelligence, hand over relevant data, guard state secrets, and "not overturn the socialist system".

· Axis released a security notice on their Cybersecurity Portal with details of each CVE.

· Genetec has dropped support for Dahua and Hikvision, citing US block listing and ONVIF.

To establish an innovative approach and maintain focus, we can apply bellow key themes.

· Process

Review of changes in how the business operates and risks are associated with the security solution. Review of the suitability assessment/ gap analysis, including but not limited to the core hardware ( as highlighted with samples above), legislation, regulations.

· Migration

A complete refurbishment is not always the most feasible option when it comes to an outdated security solution. In many cases, migration should be able to bridge the gap.

· Benefits

Return on Investment. Also, meeting the business case on behalf of the operator.

· Issues and Risks

Review of Cyber Risks, vulnerabilities, integration, and legislation issues.

· Long term strategy

Provide a hybrid solution and surveillance as a service with robust cyber security, regularly review the business case, and security risks assessment.
